The 4-1-1 rule to improve your Twitter feed

Now that I have just created the Twitter account for this website (@dgrijuelaen), I have started to investigate methods to make my tweets more appealing and interesting for my followers and I’ve run into the 4-1-1 rule by TippingPoint Labs.

This formula is designed to keep your feed attractive, build relationships with other Twitters of the same topic and to attract visitors to your website too, of course.

The 4-1-1 rule consists of maintaining the following relation of tweets:

Tweet 4 pieces of content from others and 1 retweet for every self promotion tweet.

All the content twitted must be related to our topic and the retweet should be especially relevant. The 4 pieces of content from others will contain a link plus the corresponding @twitter.

Keep in mind that the most important thing of Twitter is to create an audience and maintain conversations with it, not tweeting 50 times a day, not going unnoticed, and not promoting yourself only. By doing these things you will end up boring people and losing followers.

To avoid losing a lot of time on Twitter and keep things organized there are many tools available, such as Hootsuite. These tools allow you to manage multiple twitter accounts and post tweets on specific dates. This way in less than 20 minutes a day, I can prepare the tweets for the following day and respond to messages and mentions received during the day.

What do you thing of this rule? Are you already doing something similar? I personally am going to use it from now on to probe results.
